The Health & Safety Leader is essential in creating and maintaining secure, healthy workplaces across multiple locations. This role ensures effective implementation and continuous improvement of safety programs organization wide. Through comprehensive audits and assessments, they identify risks and develop proactive action plans. Collaborating closely with senior leadership and operations, they uphold compliance with safety protocols. Actively engaging with employees on the production floor, the Health & Safety Leader promptly addresses concerns and fosters a culture of well-being.
This role provides expert advice and guidance on health and safety matters across the organization with collaboration extending to include our supporting partners, including our Agency Partners. By analyzing accident trends and near-miss information, they identify areas for improvement and implement targeted measures. This collaborative partnership establishes a strong framework for integrating safety initiatives, aligning protocols with strategic goals, and mitigating risks. Prioritizing the safety and well-being of all team members, the Health & Safety Leader consistently enhances programs to create secure workplaces across multiple sites.

Primary Responsibilities
- Establish an Occupational Safety Management System to promote safety awareness, minimize hazards, and prevent injuries across multiple locations through development, implementation, and management.
- Ensure H&S policies, procedures, and practices meet or exceed legal, company, and customer requirements.
- Conduct trend analysis, provide findings, solutions, and coaching to address safety issues and facilitate shared learnings.
- Resolve issues and provide on-floor coaching to promote a safe production environment.
- Monitor changes to H&S regulations and communicate necessary procedural updates to internal stakeholders.
- Oversee incident investigations, including root-cause analysis, and recommend corrective and preventive measures for timely resolution.
- Promote proactive guidance, awareness, and best practices in H&S initiatives.
- Coordinate health, and safety, efforts, including compliance, training, and contractor safety, in collaboration with other professionals and management.
- Provide technical assistance in risk assessment, safe work systems, and operational decision-making to ensure compliance and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure reporting obligations are met, analyze health and safety data, and strengthen the Internal Responsibility System within the facility.
- Assist with pre-job planning, hazard assessments, and training, and perform internal audits to ensure compliance with H&S programs.
- Develop and deliver H&S training based on legislative requirements and trend analysis.
- Support and participate in the Joint Health and Safety Committee to achieve program goals.
- Manage incident investigations and support the management of workers' compensation cases, guiding accident prevention and claim reduction.
- Oversee ergonomic and industrial hygiene programs on-site.
- Develop site-specific Emergency Response Plans
- Lead incident investigations using root cause analysis and recommend effective corrective and preventive measures.
- Develop communication plans for H&S programs and facilitate ongoing updates and awareness.
- Champion a collective team approach to reduce occupational health and safety risks.
- Act as a subject matter expert in guiding the site general Leader on H&S matters.
- Assist in the development of organizational H&S policies, programs, and procedures.
Required Experience
- 7+ years’ experience in a similar role with demonstrated knowledge of the food manufacturing, pharmaceutical, or construction industry for a medium to large employer.
- Professional certification in Health and Safety, a bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety (EHS), or a related technical field.
- Certified Health and Safety Professional i.e., CSP/CRSP®/PSAC® or CHSC required.
- Previous experience leading Teams
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills. The Individual must be able to build strong relationships with both internal and external customers and participate effectively on cross-functional teams without direct supervisory responsibility for the teams.
- Demonstrated experience in Health & Safety Program development and implementation of new or changing regulations.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and strong attention to detail.
- Proven ability to lead, develop, and engage senior leaders.
- Must be able to prioritize tasks and manage multi-task effectively.
- Strong proven problem-solving, analytical, and reporting skills
- Strong Project Management skills
- Strong knowledge of the OHSA/OSHA and other related Health and Safety legislation
- Prior development and training experience in Health, Safety, and Environmental disciplines
- Ability to be the visible, trusted senior safety representative for health and safety on-site.
- Knowledge and practical experience in incident investigation and site inspections are required.
- Strong administrative, multi-tasking, time management, planning, and organizational skills
- Strong computer proficiency, specifically using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Office, etc.)
- Ability to work with minimal supervision as well as within a collaborative team setting.
